First Aid training

Belinda from St John came and taught us about basic first aid before going on camp. We learnt how to deal with bleeding by applying pressure and elevating. Everyone had a go at applying bandages to 'wounds'.
We also learnt about how to put people in the recovery position when they are unconscious.
Sam Casse from Room 7 was suffering from hypothermia so we covered her in heaps of blankets and checked on her regularly to make sure that she was warming up.
We learnt lots of practical things which will help if someone around us gets hurt or injured!

Room 4 visits Harold & Pip

Harold and Pip came to Lawrence Area School in the Life Education mobile classroom in the first week of Term 4. We had three visits with Harold and Pip to learn all about our body systems, in particular the digestive system, the respiratory system, the circulatory system ..... and others. We learnt how our body parts work together to make our body operate effectively. We also found out how important our liver is - did you know that your liver does over 500 jobs in your body? Some of the things that it does is: stores vitamins and minerals, breaks down poisons and chemicals e.g bee stings, warms the blood.... and many more.

We also learnt how to read the nutritional information on the back of food packaging. We learnt to look in the 100g column of the packaging, and to check for less than 10g of sugar and fat as these foods are healthier choices. Also less than 120mg of sodium (salt) is healthier for us.
We were amazed at the levels of sugar and fat in some foods that we thought were healthy, especially muesli bars and some fruit bars that were advertised as healthy! We found out that some of our everyday breakfast foods e.g Nutrigrain, are not that good for us as everyday breakfast foods. They are still ok to have occasionally; maybe just for weekend breakfasts.
So check that packaging at home and maybe you will be able to make some healthier choices for your own snacks and meals.

Meet Kitty Galore

We always welcome visitors in Room 4 and the special guest who dropped in for news this morning was no exception. Meet 'Kitty Galore.' This is Jackson's baby hare, and we think she might be about 3 weeks old. Jackson's Dad found her at his work and brought her home to the family. They have been feeding her milk formula because she is still a wee baby.
Everybody enjoyed having a cuddle, and she also hopped around the classroom floor.
It was a lovely surprise, and a great way to start the term. Thanks to Jackson's Mum for bringing her in!!!!

Hello Team

Hi Everybody,

I hope the holidays are going really well for you all. It was nice to catch up with some of you at the park today.

How is the fundraising famine going? Some of you will be all finished up by now. Remember it does not have to be for the whole holidays, just as long as it suits you and your family.

See you all next week,
Don't forget to tell your family and friends to visit our blog, so far we 724 visits, but it would be great to have 1,000!!!
